Having the Right Conversations is Critical | Safe Surfing for Kids

Oct 11 2018

Chris McKenna:

Hi. I’m Chris McKenna from Protect Young Eyes, and in partnership with Worksighted, we want to bring you a series of short helpful videos so that you can protect your family from online danger. So let’s jump right in.

When it comes to being a parent in the digital age, I think it’s sometimes easy to believe that we don’t know enough. If you’re not an IT professional, you sometimes think, “I can’t possibly help my kid in using technology responsibly.” I would say that’s a lie. In my experience, parents already have the most powerful weapon necessary in order to prepare a kid how to use technology well. It’s the power of conversation.

When parents have persistent and consistent talks about everything, they give their kids tools in order to use technology well. One question that I often get from parents in terms of conversation goes like this. “Hey, Chris, what’s the right age to talk to my kid about pornography?” I don’t know their family, but my response to them always goes something like this. “I don’t know you, and I don’t know your kid, but if your kid rides a school bus, they should probably know the word.” They’re ready before you are, so just have the talk.

See, as parents, we probably didn’t have a mom or dad who talked to us about all of these things, but that was how it worked in an analog world. In the digital world, we have to talk to our children about all of the awkward things that nobody talked to us about when we were growing up.

This is why we wrote a blog post called How to Talk to a Five-Year-Old About Porn, which often gets people excited like, “No way.” Yes. We need to talk to our five-year-olds about pornography if they have a tablet.

I hope this information is helpful for you. Please visit ProtectYoungEyes.com where you can read our blog. You can register for our biweekly parent newsletter. You can also find us on Facebook, where we’re constantly providing the most up-to-date information for parents.
