Instagram What’s the Big Deal | Safe Surfing for Kids

Sep 27 2018

Chris McKenna:

Hi. I’m Chris McKenna from Protect Young Eyes, and in partnership with Worksighted, we want to bring you a series of short, helpful videos so that you can protect your family from online danger. So, let’s jump right in.

Mom or Dad, maybe you have an Instagram account of your own in addition to the account that your son or daughter has. Now, when it comes to social media, the top two are Snapchat and Instagram. Snapchat often gets all the news in terms of how it’s being used inappropriately, but at Protect Young Eyes, we actually believe that when it comes to inappropriate content for our young people, Instagram is far worse than Snapchat.

Down in the Instagram options down below, there’s a little magnifying glass which is the explore feature. In there, you can look for any hashtag, any user that you want, and unfortunately, as a parent, you can’t turn this off. This means that a child could do a search for inappropriate pornographic content, clear their search history, and you would never know.

It’s for this reason, at Protect Young Eyes, we don’t believe that any child under the age of 15 is probably ready for some of the pressures that come with Instagram, including the pressures to search for inappropriate content.

I hope that this information is helpful for you. Please visit where you can read our blog. You can register for our bi-weekly parent newsletter. You can also find us on Facebook where we’re constantly providing the most up-to-date information for parents.

Thank you so much for watching this video. Protect Young Eyes, in partnership with Worksighted wish you the very best as you take steps to protect your family today.
