Windows 8.1: The START button is back!

Oct 24 2013

Window 1

The single feature requested the most from our customers was a return of the START button.  Microsoft listened and with Windows 8.1, users can enable the button.  That’s not the only feature Microsoft added.  Here’s a list of the more important improvements that we are seeing from Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 Improvements:

  • Boot directly to the Desktop. Not a fan of the tile interface, no worries. With 8.1, you can boot directly to the desktop and bypass the tile interface completely.
  • Better multi-tasking with Apps.  Apps can now be resized and snapped side-by-side with more options to provide better multitasking and flexibility for users.
  • More Color! Windows 8.1 is now offering more colors and backgrounds for the start screen; they are now even including ones in motion. Not only will consumers be able to personalize their experiences they will now be able to search more efficiently.
  • Improved Search. The Search charm will provide global search results powered by Bing in a rich, simple-to-read, aggregated view of many content sources (the web, apps, files, SkyDrive, actions you can take) to provide the best “answer” for your query.
  • Apps. With these advanced setting Windows will be improving all their built in apps that come with Windows 8 for Windows 8.1. For example, the Photos app now has some new editing features that lets you quickly edit or adjust photos when you view them in the Photos app or open them from other places like the Mail, SkyDrive, and Camera apps. In addition, you can have apps automatically update versus manually updating when an update is ready.
  • Remote Desktop Services Enhancements. Users will enjoy a more seamless experience with RemoteApps and multiple displays.  Administrators will enjoy Session Shadowing and more flexibility with storage especially in VDI environments.
  • Security Improvements.  Security is always a concern to Microsoft and they continue to provide new features that help prevent and minimize threats.  Windows 8.1 introduces better malware resistance, Remote business data management and removal, device lockdown and disk encryption options.
