5 Things I Love About Windows 10

Jan 27 2020

By: Matt Becker

I’ve been a Windows user for a while. Think Windows 3.1. I did my first install of Windows 95 from a giant stack of floppy disks.  Suffice it to say, Windows is my favorite operating system – I spend 10 hours a day using it!  As of January 2019, it became the most popular operating system in the world.  I wanted to share a few of my favorite things in Windows 10 – some of which you may not even know about yet!

 1 – Easy Version Identification

To do this, click Start and type “about” – click on “About your PC”.  If you read about a feature you don’t see, you will need to update your install to be on that version

2 – Clipboard History

Starting in Windows 10, 1903 you have the ability to see your clipboard history.  To enable, simply press the Windows key + v.  You have to enable it first, but then you can scroll through items you have copied – and click on them to insert them!

3 – Dark Mode!

For someone who spends many hours a day using Windows, dark mode can help ease eye strain.  To enable in Windows, click Start, type Settings à Personalization à Colors. Scroll down and select the “Dark” option under the “Choose your app mode” section.

This will only do Windows – you need to select it in other applications – for example in Office, File à Options. On the “General” tab, look for the click the “Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office” section and set the “Office Theme” drop-down there to the “Black” option.  Personally, I use Dark Grey, but to each their own

4 – Emojis

Bear with me, this one is a bit pedantic.  However, I love using emojis.  Windows key + period (.)  will bring up a built-in emoji keyboard.  😁

5 – Snipping tool – Starting in 1903, the snipping tool got renamed Snip & Sketch and got a dedicated keyboard shortcut.  Windows key + shift + S brings it up, and you can simply grab what you want on the screen, it’s automatically placed on your clipboard, ready to be pasted into an email, Word doc (or whatever)
